Course in Corrosion and Corrosion Control
in Light Water Nuclear Reactors
course Instructor: Barry M. Gordon, M.S., P.E.
Student quotes:
- Fantastic! The man is not only super smart,
but also very entertaining. The NRC more than
got their money’s worth out of this guy.
He could easily answer most questions off the
top of his head and quickly admitted when he
wasn’t sure about something or just did
not know and took prompt action to follow up.
He made himself available after class and provided
his e-mail to students to provide after hours
support (provided additional documents to students).
The gift that keeps on giving. Barry was open
to all questions and comments and valued the
input from all students. Barry also provided
lots of good stories and provided excellent real
life examples of corrosion.
- I have taken training class for over
35 years. This was the best class I have
ever taken! I am usually comatose during
training classes, but not this time!
- This class is a solid and comprehensive overview
of topics relevant to nuclear power plant corrosion
with an excellent course manual for future use. Mr.
Gordon is a great instructor with a wealth of
real world experience.
- Outstanding job! You know
that I loved your class the first time around;
but somehow, some way, you improved on that. I
think that I’ll only wait two years
or so before signing up again. You
deserve a special teacher award for making
corrosion and Pourbaix diagrams fun and exciting. Thank
you for so freely sharing yourself with us,
you are very special. You can and do
make a difference!
- Excellent course that should be required for
all license renewal personnel.
- It was a pleasure to meet you and I really
enjoyed your course. I learned a lot of
new information about corrosion control which
helps NRC employees really understand the challenges
the nuclear industry is facing. I now know
who to call when I have a detailed corrosion
engineering question to ask. Please continue
to teach this course for many more years to NRC
employees.
- Its breadth and depth were excellent. Its
balance between the historical and current implications
was well-placed. The incorporation of international
experience in developing the US operating and
regulatory perspective was great.
- This was a great introduction to corrosion
and reactors. This course gave new (NRC) people
a broad overview of BWR and PWR construction
and operating issues.
- Very good presentation style – enthusiastic
and knowledgeable. I was very impressed
with the material presented and the way that
it was presented.
- Barry actually made a very
boring (albeit essential) topic very interesting
and fun! He is full of this subject and obviously
a passion for the work.
- Barry performed very well. I have been to the
Technical Training Center for training on eight
different occasions. Barry has been the best
instructor I have had. Form tone to annunciation
to student interaction, Barry was very good!
- Solid/comprehensive
overview of topics relevant to NPP corrosion. Excellent
course manual for future reference. Great
instructor with a wealth of real world experience
in this subject.
- Barry did an outstanding job keeping the class
flowing. He provided supplemental information
that helped illuminate principals covered in
the text. He fully addressed all questions raised
by the students. His wealth of experience in
the area of nuclear plant corrosion is a major
contributor to the quality of the class.
- The many illustrations helped to bring the
theoretical topic to real life. The instructors
demeanor was very professional and he had outstanding
knowledge on the subjects he went over. Excellent
instructor!
- I believe that Mr. Gordon has had extensive
industry and research/development experience
as well as consulting. The subject is a
challenging one in consideration of the width
and depth involving different disciplines.
- Mr.
Gordon collected and organized the class material
well and beautifully. He was very open
to any questions and discussions, which lead
to, I believe, productive training
- Barry - thought the course was great and will
recommend to other legal staff that works on
technical issues. You'll see more lawyers
the next time you're here!
- Excellent overview of corrosion processes
in the nuclear industry. Excellent job
and very good rapport with students.
- Presenter was knowledgeable, well prepared,
explained concepts well. Excellent discussion. Very
willing to provide additional data/info and
discuss any questions.
- Instructor was very knowledgeable in the subject
area. He did an excellent job of presenting
the material and mixing humor to keep the class’ attention. He
was also good at answering questions.
- Experience of instructor allows excellent use
of knowledge for instructing students. This
course should be considered for inclusion in
part of initial inspector quals. Very good
course to take! I would highly recommend
to other inspectors.
- Mr. Gordon was very knowledgeable in topic
material and current on both industry and regulatory
perspectives. Presentation style was
easy going including management of inputs from
topic “experts” within the class. Tone
variance and material interruption (jokes,
stories and asides) were appropriate to aid
in attention span. Ownership and genuine
concern in the course were obvious. Overall,
a great instructor.
- Broad coverage of the topic. Slides are
an excellent source of operating experience (OE).
- Barry
is an excellent knowledge guy with an excellent
slide collection. Course should be offered
more often, should be taken by all residents,
DRP, DRS, etc
- Instructor provided a complete “picture” of
corrosion starting with the basics and the science
behind it. Also provided good examples
and pictures.
- Excellent presenter. Technically knowledgeable
with good presenting skills. Included
appropriate uses of anecdotes and humor to
break up what could be very “heavy” subject
matter.
- Very comprehensive of corrosion mechanisms
that impact nuclear power plants. Lots
of operating experience and pictures related
to commercial LWR corrosion.
- Best NRC class I ever took.
- The great thing about Barry is that he manages to keep you on topic and guide you through what you need to do without necessarily giving you all the answers, which is exactly how you learn. Barry is also extremely approachable. I've never felt hesitant to go and ask him a question.
